Empire Road – tells the story of a time after an apocalyptic event changed the world forever. Unlike most works that deal in this theme, Empire Road is set at a time after the initial panic, and also after the fight to survive and acclimatise to the new way of things. Set approximately 200 years after the cataclysmic events that reset every aspect of daily life, and reanimated the dead, the world as it’s know to the main characters of the book is reduced to a network of Iron Age style villages and communities that all share a common road and the same river as their water source. Linking all the communities together, the Empire Road isn’t travelled unless by necessity. Guarded by Rangers that protect travellers as they move between the fortified communities, who are each suspicious of one another, outsiders and the risks of being overrun by the dead, one of the few regular travellers along the Empire Road is a travelling performance group. The story is told by a 14 year old boy named Elijah, who has been apprenticed to the show’s owner. Led by an ageing showman who misses no opportunity to capitalise on any situation to his own advantage, his long life of facing diversity pays off as the first war between communities unfolds around them. Along with his right hand in the troupe, Boss relies heavily on the loyalty of a renowned Gladiator named Alexis, and an acrobatic adagio duo named Raf and May. The troupe becomes the central figures in the most significant political and military events of their times.
